1.需要的不多，想要的太多。
Xūyào de bù duō, xiǎng yào de tài duō.

2.知恩报恩为先，利人便是利己。
Zhī ēn bàoēn wèi xiān, lì rén biàn shì lìjǐ.

3.尽心尽力第一，不争你我多少。

Deepwater Horizon: The Movie

Jeff Skoll's social film company, Participant Media, has picked up the rights to adapt the New York Times article, "Deepwater Horizon's Final Hours." The deal was done in partnership with Summit Entertainment and Imagenation Abu Dhabi--the film will tell the story of what happened on the rig when it exploded, including the story of how over 100 people survived.

"It was impossible to be paying attention and not have this story catch your eye," Participant's Executive Vice President of Production, Jonathan King, tells Fast Company. "Everybody knows what happened after, but not many people know what happened at that moment and how people survived. Part of this story felt less known than what happened afterward. That was the part that felt like a movie, the story of those heroes and heroines."

Participant produces both documentary and narrative films that have a social action theme--The Cove, Food Inc, Waiting for Superman, Fair Game, and Syriana are all previous productions. Should the film make it to the big screen, it will be one of the more action-heavy films in the company's catalog, given the nature of the story. The timeliness and relevance of the film to the American public, Participant feels, makes it particularly resonant.

"It's hard for us to find issues that are on point, socially relevant, and that can be compete with big movies out there," says King. "It's certainly an event that resonates and it's inherently dramatic, because of what those oil rigs are like--larger than football fields on both sides. And there were many acts of heroism."

The social action campaign is already being developed--that's generally a component of Participant's projects that takes shape early on in the process; partnerships with NGOs are being finalized now.

"As soon as we put a project into development, we start talking about how to address the issue--the educational and advocacy part of it," says King.

Facebook Will Be Baked Into Dozens Of Mobile Devices This Year

Late last year we broke the news about the upcoming Facebook Phone project, which sparked a media frenzy as the social network claimed this to be wrong, only to later admit that it did exist (the explanation being that there was no ‘Facebook Phone’, but that there are many Facebook Phones). Last week we got a video demo of one of these devices: the Android-based, INQ Cloud Touch. And today HTC announced its own Facebook-branded phones. But this is only the beginning.

Today Facebook announced on its blog that we’ll be seeing many similar integrations over the coming months:

In addition to these new phones from INQ and HTC, you’ll also be seeing similar deep Facebook integration on dozens of other devices over the course of this year. Some manufacturers will be highlighting Facebook as a part of their phones’ on-screen interfaces, and others will use our brand as an element of the device hardware itself.

The Facebook functionality on the INQ devices include single sign-on (you won’t have to keep reentering credentials for various applications, because it will use your Facebook account) and links to popular features like Chat and Places. The HTC devices actually have a Facebook hardware button.

However, while these devices will all feature prominent Facebook integration, we’re also hearing that Facebook continues to work on a different and more exciting project: a ‘social’ version of Android that includes much deeper Facebook integration throughout the OS, stripping out Google’s apps in favor of its own. In other words, Facebook could have its own mobile operating system in the not-so-distant future.

I know all this because it turns out to be a SCAM for me after investing more than 5K of worthless vouchers. Please bear with me as I explain that is all why it is a CON.

a) The most attractive Voucher inside the RM 499 voucher (Which cost only RM 35 per voucher if you are a grand master agent) are the package of 5 days 4 Nights international holiday for 2 adult including flight rebates. This trip is to Bali, Pattaya and Phuket.

Here is what they didn’t tell you or even the participants before they join as an AGENT.

1) They will show you lots of attractive hotels in Bali, Pattaya and Phuket, BUT if you are unable to fulfill the following non- make sense term of condition, you only have 1 or 2 cheap 3- stars hotel to stay and you don’t have rights to choose.

 You must be 35 years old above only you are partly qualified to have a chance to stay in all this luxury hotels they are talking about in their website.

 Your annual income MUST BE RM 160 000 to RM 180 000 annually only you will be qualify to be place in this hotels. This means your target group of purchaser who are qualify to use this voucher will need to have an average income of RM 15 000 per month to qualify. You would ask how they know you annual income. They will check your Credit Card and even when u checks in to the hotels, they will check on your details especially on your credit cards.

 You MUST listen to 90 mins of presentation from the hotels convince you to buy their membership. People have been reported drag up to 3 hours as the hotel salesperson insists them to take the memberships. This are agent who try out the package. Please beware of that! Not to mention you have to pay RM 400 deposit fees and RM 100 booking fees before you even go for holidays. If you miss the presentation, they will forfeit your RM 400 when you try to claim.

 If you are younger than 35 years old, they will only have 1 or 2 old resorts rooms for you. For places like Pattaya or Bali, only one hotel choice is available. And the price they give can be found cheaper in www.agoda.com. Please compare, and Agoda even have breakfast included. The 3 star room will give u rooms that is unable to let out, means hotel rooms that are near to generator, rooms that is far from enterence, havent renovated or even have cases of death which local avoid staying in.

 The question you need to ask yourself is this, Will a 35 years old successful businessmen who have annual income of RM 15 000 per month want to go for a tour that required him to listen to 90 Mins talk, 2 tedious paper work procedure in Max Generation office, need to book 3 months ahead, NO GROUP BOOKING and have no hotel preference to choose for his family or honeymoon?

 Second questions, how many of your group of friends under 35 years old wanted to buy a voucher of RM 499 but only can stay in a cheap hotel of THB 100 less? Not to mention, you need to come personally to the office to payment or post the money with your own risk, NO Group booking , need to pay in advance RM 400 for deposit , AND RM 100 for hotel booking fees.

10 Tips for Optimizing Web Form Submission Usability

Web forms play a big part in every day web use. If you build and/or run websites, chances are, you have a web form in it, whether it’s a simple contact form or a rich and robust web app. There are several ways to make sure your web forms are optimized for your users. Here are some tips for making sure that your form submission process is user-friendly.

1. Clearly Highlight Required Fields

It’s annoying as a user to submit a web form only to later find out that you’ve missed required input fields.

A common convention for highlighting required fields is to have an asterisk (*) beside their label. Explicitly stating that an input field is required or that the field is optional is a safe way to go.

The Zappos.com registration web form highlights required fields with an asterisk (*). Optional fields are explicitly stated.

2. Provide User-Friendly and Descriptive Error Messages

I’m sure you hate it when you make a mistake in a web form and all the error says is "You must fill out all of the required fields below," when they should really provide a more specific error message like "You forgot to enter your e-mail address."

Performing real-time data validation as the user is filling out the web form is a good solution to ambiguous error messages. For example, immediately after filling out the email address input field, the web form should check whether it’s in the correct format, and if it isn’t, the user is immediately notified.

Yahoo!’s sign up form provides meaningful real-time error messages even before the form is submitted.

3. Use Client-Side (JavaScript) Data Format Validation

Using JavaScript data validation saves the user time, as well as reduces the amount of work your web server has to perform to process incoming web form submissions. Client-side error validation allows you to let users know they’ve made a mistake right away, instead of after they’ve submitted the form. This is good for any input fields that don’t need to check your database; things such as making sure the provided email address is in the correct format or that a phone number only contains numbers.

SurveyGizmo’s sign up form lets you know that the format of the email address you entered is invalid.

4. Visually Style Focused Form Fields to Let Users Know Where They Are

Make sure that you visually style input fields so that it is very apparent which field the user is on. You can do this by using the CSS :focus pseudo-class selector.

Wufoo’s web form visually styles the active input field by giving it a distinctive background.

Make the input field have a different border color at the minimum — by default, web browsers will do this for you, but make sure that the default color is distinctive against your website’s design.

Google Chrome’s default style for a focused input field is to provide it with a yellow border. In Firefox, it’s a faint blue border.

5. Show Progress Clearly

If your web form is big and it spans across multiple pages (or has several steps), make sure that you provide the user with constant feedback on their progress to let them know how much more time they will require to finish the web form submission process. This is common in cases such as an online survey form with many questions or an e-store’s checkout process.

All it takes is displaying "Step 4 out of 5," or something of that nature. If they keep clicking "Next" buttons with no clear vision of when they’ll be done, they’ll most likely stop sooner than you’d like.

Amazon.com’s checkout process has 4 pages. The form shows you where you are and how much more there is to fill out.

Of course, the better alternative would be to shorten your web form — but barring that option, at least give the web form user an indication of where they are in the completion process.

6. Save/Cache Form Data Periodically

Forms that go through multiple pages or steps are prone to user errors. To avoid data loss, you definitely want to implement a way to save your users’ inputs in either a session or cookie variable. This makes the web form more fault-tolerant, and improves your chances that the form will be completed even after accidents such as the user navigating away from the web page. Having to re-fill out the web form may discourage users from completing it.

7. Ditch the Default "Submit" Text

Instead of having your web form’s submit button say "Submit," have it remind the user what it is they’re doing, like "Sign up now," or even better, let the user know of the advantages of filling out this form.

Basecamp’s signup form replaces the default "Submit" text with something more useful.

8. Your "Cancel" Button is a Major Distraction

If you were at a store buying a new shirt and the salesperson asked you, "Are you sure you really want to get this shirt?" would you continue to buy the shirt? Probably not. Maybe you’d be hesitant; is the salesperson telling you the shirt doesn’t look good on you?

Same goes with your web forms; having a "cancel" button may make your users think twice about what they’re filling out.

9. Show Users the Proper Input Format

If you’re asking your users for a specific input format — such as a phone number or credit card number — let them know what you’re expecting. If a password has to have a certain number of characters, or if it must contain certain combinations of characters, clearly describe these requirements. This reduces ambiguity and makes filling up the form quicker.

The Geico registration form provides unambiguous instructions on what format they’re expecting.

10. Single Column Vertical Forms Are Better

According to an eye tracking study by cxpartners, a user experience design agency, scanning down the form is preferable to scanning from left to right. It reduces the number of eye movements you need to make in order to fill out the form.

If your business relationships are going to work, your clients have to like you. If they feel comfortable with you, you’ll be on solid ground; a good rapport reduces the likelihood that you’ll get into difficult client situations. When you invest in a relationship — any relationship — the value of that relationship increases and it becomes more likely to bear fruit. So, once you’ve found awesome clients who are fond of you and your work, go the extra mile to ensure their loyalty and esteem. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

1. Don’t Neglect Them

No one likes to feel forgotten. Your clients want to know they can rely on you, now and in the future. Sometimes we forget to stay in touch with clients, especially if their project is a content management system and they can update it themselves once it’s been launched. Upon delivery and during the first stages of CMS troubleshooting, communication between the web professional and the client usually fades. This is less of a problem when you are maintaining the website for the customer, because you have to be in touch about every update.

Be in touch with your clients a couple of times per year at least, regardless of the type of work you did for them. Holidays provide a good opportunity to show customers that you remember them, and you can combine a couple of work-related matters with a friendly "best wishes" email or phone call. Ask about their current projects and whether they have needs or problems. You can advertise your services: suggest a website or logo redesign, a holiday newsletter or the addition of certain features to their website (a banner, new call-to-action buttons, etc.).

Occasionally contacting your clients will remind them that you’re still active and available, but above all, it will make them feel that you enjoyed working for them — enough to send a greeting and to touch base.

To avoid being tardy with service and replies, predefine acceptable waiting times for your clients. You can either detail the matter in an FAQ page or prepare specific guidelines for each of your clients or services. Let clients know what is considered "urgent." For example, when I maintain a conference website, updates about the program or the registration process are considered urgent, whereas a new photo of the conference location can be posted at any time. Urgent updates should be posted within 24 hours. For less urgent updates, decide on appropriate timeframes and let your clients know what they are. Tech issues can be approached the same way.

In any case, let your clients know you’ve received their request, and estimate a time for its completion. Then, when you’ve managed their request, let them know it’s finished and suggest that they look over the result. If you’ve uploaded some news to their website, for example, send a confirmation email that includes a link to the new content.

5. Grant Them Privileges

Awesome clients should be rewarded for their cooperation and constructive criticism. If you’re interested in establishing long-term relationships, inform your clients of the ongoing benefits that come from collaborating with you.

Offer discounts to those who choose your services a second time.

Be understanding and flexible with your pricing and payment methods for clients who have always been punctual with payments and trusting of your ideas.

Offer freebies to customers who have stayed with you for a long period of time — perhaps a new banner, a website enhancement (like a new design for the photo gallery) or a free domain name renewal for the new year (it’s timely and low-cost).

Let them know they’re at the top of your list and that you cater to their needs first. Appreciating good customers will benefit your relationships, build trust and serve as a marketing gesture.

No matter how much you offer, sometimes things won’t turn out the way you planned. Don’t become embittered if a loyal client chooses a new service provider; maybe they want something you can’t offer. Maybe your services could use some more sparkle. If a relationship with a client goes sour, even though you’ve done your best, perhaps it’s because you’ve spoiled them — or perhaps they didn’t deserve those perks in the first place. Rethink the criteria by which you choose clients.

No matter how vitriolic a client turns out to be, don’t unleash your wrath on other clients. If you can’t handle your disappointment or channel it appropriately, you’ll miss opportunities for collaboration. You’re allowed to be a little cautious, but remember that the client has to trust you and your skills first; don’t be afraid to show off your best attributes and client-management tactics.

More Smartphone Buyers Choose Android Over iPhone [STATS]

In the past six months, smartphone buyers in the U.S. were more likely to choose Android-powered devices over any others, including iPhones.

The Android platform has been strongly challenging Apple’s mobile offerings for quite some time now, and the release of the shiny newFroyo (a.k.a Android 2.2) OS leaves little to be desired.

Software aside, Android-powered hardware is as diverse as it is impressive.

Android phones range from affordable models suitable for families with kids (e.g., Motorola’s Charm, a surefire winner for the teen girl set) to high-powered, 4-inch, 8-megapixel superphones fit to satiate the geekiest of gadget fiends (Droid X and Galaxy S, anyone?).

All of those reasons, coupled with network diversity and relative affordability, have catapulted Android phones to a leading position for new gadget-buyers this year — no mean feat, considering that the iPhone 4 produced the “most successful iPhone launch ever” — which was accompanied by as much media hype as fan frenzy.

Data from Nielsen shows that despite a successful launch for the iPhone 4, Android devices still rose to capture 32% of the market of new smartphone buyers between January and August 2010.

Now, that’s not to say that Android is the number-one mobile OS just yet. While it’s popular as a choice for new devices, the iPhone predated Android phones by a few years, and Android phones didn’t truly become competitive with iPhones until recently.

For all smartphones, Android still holds third place (behind iPhone and BlackBerry); however, these numbers are likely to shift, given consumer purchasing trends.

In the end, it’s hard to tell which mobile OS will come out on top, but we’re surprised that the diaspora of Android devices has made such strides in such a relatively short amount of time.

Do You Want To Succeed At Social Media Or Social Media Marketing?

Do you want to succeed at social media or social media marketing? There is a difference—a huge difference. It’s the difference between using social media tools and adopting social media philosophy; the difference between sparking posts about your marketing and posts about your product or service; and the difference between marketers who focus externally on how the brand is broadcast versus internally on how the brand is realized.

So do you want to succeed at social media or social media marketing? The answer is the former, but many marketers focus on the latter. I’d like to make this difference more real by sharing two examples—the first in the entertainment industry and the second my own experiences in a mall this weekend.

Snakes on a Plane (SoaP) is the entertainment industry’s greatest pre-release social media success story to date. The Guardian called it, “Perhaps the most internet-hyped film of all time.” Fans produced their own T-shirts, posters, trailers, novelty songs, and parodies. Producers organized a contest to select a fan's music for use in the movie. The filmmakers added shooting days in order to implement changes suggested by fans on the Internet (including Samuel Jackson’s famous and unprintable-on-this-blog line about “m&f%*#f+!@ing snakes”).

But what were all these fans fans of? Not the product, apparently. As EW put it, “SOAP came in below even the most ridiculously cynical predictions.” The reasons why the social media buzz failed to produce business success are many (including that the PG-13 film was edited to an R rating due to fan input, a change that fatally narrowed the audience—so much for the wisdom of crowds), but in the end SoaP was a social media marketing success but a social media failure.

To move the discussion out of the theater and into the mall, I am struck by how few retailers are paying attention to the difference between social media success and social media marketing success. This weekend I visited three retailers in search of men’s apparel:

Retailer One: I spent 15 minutes trying to find someone to offer assistance. The only employees to be found were behind checkout counters with long lines. I left frustrated.
Retailer Two: I walked into a fitting room to try on shirts and found it looking like Hell’s storage room (or an average teen’s bedroom) with deep piles of clothes. I left disgusted.
Retailer Three: I entered Nordstrom and found a store that was clean and staffed. I got attention and helpful assistance from an employee. And I spent $250.

Retailers One and Two are plotting social media marketing success. They have “Join us on Facebook” links on their home pages—one has 500,000 fans and the other has 1 million. They’ve enabled their catalogs with social tools so that site visitors can share products with their social networks. They run social promotions including online events and sales. And they spark engagement around fashion trends and scintillating discussion starters such as “Pick your preference: black or brown shoes?”

What good are all of these social tactics if these retailers fail to provide the sort of real-world experience that get people saying positive things? While furnishing tools that customers can use to post stuff to social networks is helpful, what matters more are experiences that inspire people to engage with and about the brands in social ways. I don’t think it is any coincidence that since the recession began in December 2007, Nordstrom’s stock (JWN) is down just 10 percent while the stock of the other two retailers is down between 30 and 50 percent. And while Nordstrom has fewer Facebook fans than the other two retailers, it has more fans-per-location based on it 193 stores. Nordstrom succeeds at both social media and social media marketing.

Does your organization want to be Snakes on a Plane, or does it want to be Nordstrom? Do you want people buzzing about your marketing or about your product or service? The difference is not found on Facebook or Twitter but in the ways companies are led. Marketing leaders who only focus on messages in social channels but fail to attend to how the brand is realized in actual product and service experiences may succeed with social media marketing but fail miserably with social media.

We all know it's the year of the pad computer (you knew that, right? Cuz see, Apple made one, so, you know) but some of us haven't yet bought into Cupertino's new iPhone Mega.

HP's Slate looked sweet, right up until it was killed, and other rumors have come and gone as well. But one that always held water was the ASUS Eee Pad family. ASUS has been extremely successful with the Eee PC line so it wasn't a huge leap of faith to think they'd pull off a nice group of pad computers.

And early reports looked great: the specs were solid, the design looked to be good, and the only thing worth whining for Android fans was that new Eee Pads would all be running variants of Windows (from Embedded Compact 7 to Windows 7 Home Premium).

But now, even that's changed, at least in the case of the EP101TC.

According to Netbook News, their staff has actually spent time at ASUS checking out the 10-inch tablet, and Windows has been dropped as the OS of choice in favor of Android. Rumors are that the prototype is currently running Android 2.2, but that ASUS plans to wait for the release of 3.0, code named Gingerbread, to use on the production units.

HOW TO: Implement a Social Media Business Strategy

Over the past few months, we’ve talked about whether you should have a social media policy and what should be included in that policy. It only seems logical to discuss the next step in the process, which is what to consider when implementing a social media strategy in your workplace.

Just having a policy isn’t good enough — you need a plan to put it in place. Here are five areas to discuss when implementing a social media strategy.

1. Determine Your Objective

Luis Ramos, CEO of The Network, reminds us that creating a social media strategy is a complex exercise because “it includes not only looking inside the organization to establish appropriate practices, usage policies and content parameters, but it also includes looking outside the organization to determine the proper degree of engagement.”

Figure out why you’re getting on the social media bandwagon and what you want to accomplish with it. This step is absolutely necessary if you plan to measure ROI or develop your own internal metrics tracking.

When General Motors put together their social media strategy, they had some specific objectives they wanted to accomplish. Christopher Barger, director of global social media at General Motors, outlined the following:

A. Become more responsive to people/consumer audiences
B. Incorporate audience/consumer feedback into your organization more quickly and effectively than has happened traditionally
C. Make your brand a little more “human” to the outside world, and show people the smarts, personality and passion of the people behind your logo
D. Increase awareness of the strength of your current product lineup, and provide perspective/accurate information about your company

The other benefit of defining objectives is that they can guide the timetable for implementation. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen an organization’s list of objectives and knew there was no way they could implement everything at once or in the timeframe they intended. Having well-defined objectives can assist in prioritization and creating the best way to phase-in a social media strategy.

Developing objectives and a timetable could also prompt a conversation about content management. Ramos suggests including in the strategy the position responsible for updating content as well as the update frequency. “Many organizations have grand plans of updating content on a regular basis only to quickly run out of topics, leaving content to become stale. As a best practice, a specific employee is typically assigned to create and manage the company’s social media pages, so he/she can respond to messages and questions within 24 hours.”

2. Find an Internal Evangelist

This is a constant source of discussion right now on the Internet (), but the bottom line is, some department needs to “own” social media. Lots of departments might be consulted when it comes to decision making, but ultimately someone has to be held accountable for the outcomes.

Which department ultimately gets the responsibility could be dependent upon the size of your organization and corporate culture. For example, Barger says social media at General Motors is “owned within the communications team, reporting up through the Vice President of Communications, who reports directly to the Chairman/CEO. Social media leadership has a seat at the communications leadership table and acts as an integral part of the larger corporate communications function.”

Smaller organizations might not have that amount of structure, so responsibility might simply fall to sales or marketing.

Another option to consider is using external resources (i.e. consultants) for certain aspects of the strategy and internal resources for the rest. Barger explains, “We use internal resources whenever possible; given that two of GM’s main goals are to become more responsive to the public and to incorporate insight back into the organization, these are things we can only effectively do if it is our team who are engaged. We use agency partners for monitoring/measurement, for identifying new opportunities and new influencers for us to reach out to, for video production, and for counsel on tactics/strategy.”

3. Consider Your Employees

This is a biggie. Organizations need to understand their employees’ level of knowledge and interest. Offer training.

And one noteworthy item for non-profits is to think about your volunteer base. Diane Gomez, public relations manager for the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), mentions that not only is PRSA staff involved, but volunteers are as well. “This includes monitoring and interacting with members (and nonmembers) who reach out to us via these channels, and is in addition to pushing out information of interest to our members.”

In addition to posting GM’s social media policy, Barger explains several things the company did to convey the company’s approach. “We posted a 45-minute ‘Social Media 101’ interactive training course on the intranet that gives employees the basics on how/why/where to engage in social media. Additionally, we developed a ‘201’ level ‘train-the-trainer’ course that introduces more complete tools and tips. Those who’ve taken this course are authorized to train others within their departments on the basics of social media. Finally, we have an internal blog, ‘Making Conversation,’ that focuses on sharing lessons we’re learning through social media outreach.”

Though she’s the president of a smaller firm, Crystal Kendrick used a similar approach with The Voice of Your Customer. “Our employees are very social media savvy and understand how to technically use the sites. We discussed the spirit of the policy and reviewed examples of ineffective social media policies. Training for our employees focused on the strategic and professional applications of the social media sites. We use ‘key word rich’ content, approved messages and in some cases, scheduled time for posting.”

Gomez added they are encouraging staff to participate in social media on behalf of the organization. “We are looking to establish an overall strategy that departments will follow when deciding when and how to use social media.” I’ve found many companies developing job aids, such as flow charts or decision trees, to help employees determine when and how to respond to blogs and inquiries on other social networking sites.

4. Check Your Tech

While most social media doesn’t need a huge technology investment, you should still take a look at the technology capabilities of your company and make sure the system can support the strategy.

As Ramos reminds us, this includes making sure social media applications aren’t hidden behind firewalls. “Before any social media components are engaged, there needs to be an understanding across the organization of the following:

- Who will have access to the sites?
- Are there any firewalls that would prevent access?
- What are the rules about time spent and content posted on the sites?

He adds, “Due to some of the technology access restrictions, some organizations have opted to build their own internal technology to offer social media type forums without the complexities of changing firewalls or altering access rules. This also allows further features like locking down postings to help control inappropriate content.”

Kendrick took a different approach to the issue of employee time on social media applications by creating “social media breaks that are very similar to smoke breaks.”

5. Listen First

A lot can be learned by watching others. Don’t be afraid to ask questions on and offline so you can learn more.

Barger encourages companies to remember “that few ideas should be rejected out of hand; not everything is going to work, but in 95% of the cases, even if something doesn’t work there is value to be gained and lessons to be learned from the ‘failure.’ The only exceptions to this rule are efforts that would contradict the basic etiquette and/or rules of social media – transparency, openness, authenticity, and avoiding ‘pure traditional marketing’ plays, etc.”

According to Kendrick, “The first few weeks were a bit hectic.” Like GM, they began to share best practices among employees, identify expert users to follow and recommend connections. She notes, “We matched our target customers to the demographics of our connections and identified gaps in our networks. From there, we began to focus on making connections with persons in target companies, industries and geographic regions and joined groups and lists of industry groups to ensure that we maximized our exposure and business opportunities.”

Conclusion

During 2010, more companies are expected to explore and engage in social media activities. While some might categorize using a social networking application as easy, that doesn’t mean developing a strategy is simple. Proper planning and execution is the key to integrating social media into your organization.

WordPress 3.0 — the newest major version of WordPress — is one of the most highly-anticipated open source upgrades this year.

WordPress is no doubt one of the most used publishing platforms. Large websites such as Smashing Magazine, Mashable, TechCrunch, the site you’re on now, and others use it to run their high-traffic websites.

According to the timeline on WordPress trac, WordPress 3.0 should have been released on May 1, 2010, but now, the core developers of WordPress have removed the release date because of bugs that still needs to be fixed.

There are expectations that the production version will be released in the last week of May, 2010 or in the early start of June, 2010.

WordPress 3.0 has already made so much buzz because of some major and fresh features that innovate the publishing platform’s user interface.

In this article, to give you all a head start for the release, I will walk you through the notable new features of WordPress 3.0. For the discussion, I used the latest beta release, which you can download from here.

The best way to experience WordPress 3.0 is by installing it on your own computer (localhost) using this easy to follow guide so that you can follow along with me hands-on.

WordPress 3.0’s User Registration Interface for Installation

The new welcome screen got a big overhaul for better security and usability. It now has options for choosing a username and setting your own password.

Before, having the default username automatically generated as "admin" was a major security risk in all the previous releases of WordPress, especially for non-web-developer users and was bad from a usability standpoint. After finishing their WordPress install, users had to create a new username and then delete the default "admin" user for security against bruteforce hacking attacks.

That’s been resolved with WordPress 3.0’s new Welcome screen.

The default Kubrick theme has been retired in WordPress 3.0 and removed from the installation package.

WordPress 3.0 will come bundled
with a new default theme called 2010 which will have built-in support for child themes, header customization and background
alterations. The new theme also has built-in support for drop down menus.

This is a brilliant move from WordPress to give users a fresh new look when they launch their WordPress site.

The Auttomatic (the creators of WordPress) theme team will release a new default theme every year which will come bundled with WordPress. That’s the reason this theme is named 2010.

2010: The Default WordPress 3.0 Theme

Header Customization in WordPress 3.0

Users can easily upload their own header backgrounds with this new WordPress 3.0 feature directly from the WordPress administration panel.

“2010″ comes with 8 beautiful header backgrounds (featured below). There is also an option for uploading your own custom headers.

The 2010 WordPress 3.0 theme also permits users to change the background of posts and pages from the backend administration panel.

There are a lot of options such as the ability to choose different colors and uploading an image to set as your background.

Adding custom background functionality in your own theme is pretty simple. Just add this one line of code in your theme’s functions.php file.

After that, users who have activated your theme will get a Background tab under the Appearance tab.

New Link Shortener

WordPress 3.0 offers better micro-blogging (e.g. Twitter) integration with its new feature called Shortlink, which gives you the ability to generate branded short links (in a similar way as is.gd or bit.ly) for sharing your posts and pages in social media.

The exciting menu management feature is one of the most anticipated and demanded features of WordPress end-users.

This new feature will make it easy as pie for users to add new navigation menus in their WordPress-powered blogs and websites.

You will need no coding experience to modify your WordPress navigation: Just drag and drop menu items, and that’s it.

You can add outgoing links, categories and pages in one single menu just by using the navigation menu’s management feature. This is an insanely awesome and powerful feature to make WordPress site management all the more easier for WordPress users.

In the 2010 WordPress 3.0 theme, the default menu gets replaced with the menu you create.

But you can create dedicated widget areas for placing navigation menus in the sidebar and other parts of your custom WordPress theme.

You can add support for this feature by adding this line in your theme’s functions.php file.

After this line, you will be able to see the Menus tab under the Appearance tab. But in order to show your navigation menus in your WordPress theme, you will need to use the wp_nav_menu() WordPress theme function.

To give you an idea, the WordPress 3.0 2010 default theme uses this code snippet to show a custom menu in header.

Support for Author Templates

Each Author in WordPress has an ID, just like categories and pages.

In WordPress 3.0, you will be able to design individual author templates. This feature can come handy on multi-author blogs like, for example, the site you’re on: Six Revisions.

Let’s use an example to illustrate how this new functionality works: I am an author (Saad Bassi) here at Six Revisions while Jacob Gube is the Chief Editor.

Let’s pretend Jacob created a custom author page for me, called author-saad.php.

With the new functionality, WordPress will first look for author-saad.php before author.php in the template files to render my page differently from the default author.php design.

The same method can be used to style Jacob’s author page, and hence, both of us will have different author templates. Pretty cool, right?

WordPress 3.0 Improves Content Management with Custom Post Types

Custom post types is another highly-demanded feature by WordPress theme developers. This feature will give them a lot of flexibility while using WordPress as a fully-featured content management system.

It will allow WordPress theme developers to create custom content types outside pages and posts. There were techniques to do this in the past, but not as robust and easy when compared to content management systems like Drupal.

In the following code snippet, I will add a custom “T-Shirts” content type tab in the WordPress backend by sticking this code snippet in my functions.php file.

WordPress 3.0’s Improved Custom Taxonomies

Custom taxonomies in WordPress is another feature which will help developers build powerful websites with less effort.

This feature is not new to WordPress 3.0; it was already available in WordPress 2.8. However, in WordPress 3.0, custom taxonomies get a revamping, loaded with new options and abilities.

With new enhancements, custom taxonomies become easier to use and allows for hierarchical relationships.

In the following snippet, I have created a new post type “jeans” with custom taxonomies of “Manufacturer” and “Style”.

Multi-Site Feature with Only One WordPress 3.0 Installation

Another big update in WordPress 3.0 is the merging of WordPress MU – a fork of WordPress that lets the user create and manage hundreds of thousands of blogs with a single install of WordPress – and the plain-jane WordPress.

What this means in nutshell: You can create a number of websites using only one installation of WordPress.

Imagine that you’re a web developer who wants to build and host your client’s blogs and sites — you can run hundreds of client sites under one WordPress installation. If you have a scalable VPS, you can do all of this more reliably and affordably than ever before!

This feature is not enabled by default. You can enable multi-site functionalities by adding the following line to wp-config.php.

After updating the file, you will get a tab of “Network” under the “Tools” menu as shown below.

You can choose whether to use sub-domains or sub-directories for network websites.

Note: You can’t select between the two options on localhost (if you installed WordPress 3.0 during this walkthrough), so I suggest testing this feature on an actual server.

Final Thoughts on WordPress 3.0’s New Features

It’s evident from all these changes that WordPress is definitely going on the right path of becoming a fully-featured publishing platform.

There is always a room for improvement, but this extensive development in WordPress 3.0 shows the dedication of WordPress core developers and the WordPress community to the world’s most famous publishing platform.

If I were to encapsulate the new features in one statement, this is what I would say: It’s evident that WordPress development is focused on making things easier for WordPress developers when it comes to using WordPress for building multiple content management systems rather than just single-site blogs.

The second most prominent thing to note is that there are minor changes in the WordPress user interface that will help WordPress beginners and users that aren’t so technologically-savvy. For example, if you haven’t set up permalinks after a fresh WordPress installation, you will get a warning that links to the Permalinks administration panel right beneath each post and page title in the WordPress writing panel.

Lia Belle HAD to have these Prada shoes, but they didn't have her size. She has very tiny feet, so this is a common issue for her.

Being the crafty Aussie that she is, she bought them in the nearest size she could find and took them to a shoe repair shop. There they removed the heel and cut-out a few centimeters from the middle length of the shoe. Then, they reattached the two severed pieces, re-sanded the heel, re-sewed the lining and refit the heel.

Sounds expensive, but she bought the shoes on sale for $250 and had $100 worth of alterations. Now, the shoes fit Lia Belle perfectly! No one can see the difference, AND she still spent less than the full retail price- smart lady.

Use fewer resources, pricing is often negotiated.
Products tend to be fairly complex (e.g. financial services or new cars).
There is some contact between buyer and seller after the sale so that an ongoing relationship is built.
Client/prospects need specific information.
The purchase tends to involve large sums of money.

There are exceptions of course, but most personal selling takes place in this way. Personal selling involves a selling process that is summarised in the following Five Stage Personal Selling Process. The five stages are:

A Day in the life of a Webmaster

When I get into work a go through a process of checks in the morning.

Check my email (for enquiries, sales orders, etc.). I keep my work email address separate from my personal address, otherwise I'd just be wading through joke emails and spam all day!

Check the website (it's always good to have a look from time to time and make sure it's still there!). I also check the previous days statistics (no. of users, referrers, etc).

Log on to whichever discussion forums I subscribe to (for Webmaster related stuff and I also moderate my own forum at http://www.weeboab.co.uk/, and here obviously). I also check up on industry news and the competition.

When all my regular checks are done in the morning, the rest of my day consists of these bits and pieces depending on the time of the month and the state of development my site is in.

Web Design - I use Dreamweaver to set up my sites. This may involve designing a new site or updating an existing site.

Graphic Design - I use Photoshop for my graphics work.

Web Marketing - depending on the time of the month, the work that this requires differs. As I launch a site, I have to register it with many search engines and also try to get it listed in various directories. There's more to do, but I'm not going to reveal all my secrets!

I spend as little time as possible in meetings, but they are sometimes necessary.

I spend a lot of my day surfing the web. Chances are most of it is unnecessary, but here's how I justify it to myself!

I need to find bits and pieces for my site.
I need to register my sites in various places.

Well, unless you happen to work for an IT company (where you know they'll be watching you), you can pretty much get away with spending all day surfing the web. Everyone else doesn't really know what your doing and you can easily make it look more complicated than it actually is, so they don't ask!

San Francisco - Apple on Monday announced the next generation of its iPhone, boasting faster speed, longer battery life, more memory and a host of software improvements while cutting the price down to 99 dollars for a basic model.

The announcement at the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco came just two days after smaller rival Palm unveiled a phone called the Pre which many analysts had predicted would take a bite out of Apple's sales.

But Apple's response looks to counter the gambit of rivals like Palm, Blackberry and phones powered by Google's Android software. Not only is the new iPhone more than a match for those phones on price and features.

The existing models are all being reduced in price, with the iPhone 3G now available for just 99 dollars, the cheapest ever for an iPhone.

The new phone, called the iPhone 3G S costs 199 dollars for a 16 GB version and 299 dollars for a 32 GB version. Apple said the new features include improved speed and performance - up to twice as fast as the iPhone 3G - with longer battery life, a high-quality 3 megapixel autofocus camera, easy-to-use video recording, hands free voice control and a digital compass. iPhone 3G S includes the new iPhone OS 3.0, with over 100 new features such as cut, copy and paste, easy text messaging, spotlight search, landscape keyboard and more.

Apple says the phone provides faster access to over 50,000 applications from Apple's App Store, where customers have already downloaded over 1 billion apps.

'iPhone 3G S is the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet and we think people will love the incredible new features including autofocus camera, video recording and the freedom of voice control,' said Apple executive Philip Schiller. 'And with a breakthrough price of 99 dollars, we are thrilled to get iPhone 3G into the hands of even more users who want them.'

Visualize your long term picture of success and put it in writing. Review your goal frequently. Your goal should be specific, measurable, achievable and compatible with where you are now. There should be an end date as well. Steven Covey calls this "Begin with the end in mind."
Try to do your planning at the same time every day. Use this time to review past accomplishments as well as future things to do.
Use only one planner to keep track of your appointments. Keeping a separate business and personal planner creates confusion.
Write out a To Do list every day. Include items that can be completed, such as "Prepare exhibits for monthly report", rather than just "Work on report."
Separate your To Do list into A, B and C priorities. "A" items are important to your long term success, "B" may be urgent but not as important and "C" are those that would be nice to do if you get the time.
Start with the A items. Don't work on a C just because it's easy to do. Also, break your A items into small manageable chunks, so they're easy to accomplish.
Check off items as you complete them to give yourself a sense of accomplishment.
Block off time in your planner for major activities. This might include a block of time for working alone on major tasks. If someone wants to meet you during that time, say "I'm sorry, I already have an appointment."
Don't jam your day full of activities. Leave time for emergencies, special opportunities and thinking time.
Be your own manager. Ask yourself if you have met your goals, and what changes you plan to make to achieve them.
Do it now. People will often say "Call me next week, and we'll book an appointment then." Respond by saying, "Let's save ourselves a call and do it now."
Always plan time for balance; include family, fitness, recreation, social and spiritual activities.
Conduct a time study to see how you're doing and where the opportunities for improvement lie. Many people are only able to spend one quarter of their time on top priority activities. Moving this up to one third of the week means almost 4 more hours per week on key activities.
